Chapter 6: Hypermedia Tools

Commercial Hypermedia Product:

The NewYorkTimes magazine is a great example of reference material that a teacher can use in their classroom to enhance learning. The New York Times website is the digital version of their magazine and it allows you to quickly access different journals on many topics. World, U.S., New York, business, science, and Arts news are just a few of the links you can click to read different published articles. This website could aid your classroom by giving your students real world information to use in various subject areas. This might help your students create motivation to learn and research by giving them relevant up to date subject material. You can use it for all subjects throughout your classroom and it will engage your students and help them to participate and actively learn. Why stop here? Many local newspaper companies have an online option which is environmentally healthy.

Chosen Multimedia Authoring Tool:

I chose audio and video production and editing systems to research for my future classroom. I have used iMovie once before in a class and decided to give it a second chance with some of the features. I chose to make a trailer for a book instead of a book report. I believe this can show a teacher not only if the student read a book, but also to what depth they truly understood the material. I would not use this software with the younger age range, it may be on a higher learning level for most younger students on their own. As a class you could use any of the features. As a teacher you can use iMovie to document research students did, or even a field trip you went on. If you are wanting to use this with younger students you can create a PowerPoint with them and add music, which may be slightly easier for them to do alone. Below is a video I made using iMovie. It is an example of what a student could use iMovie for, but with greater detail and more slides. Enjoy!

  1. Working with technology is a lot more fun than writing a book report!

  2. Your idea is great for the book report and I agree with you thoughts on how it gives the teacher a greater understanding of what the student got out of the book. Also, the New York Times is such a great resource I had overlooked great resources like that, so thank you for that reminder!

  3. I love the idea of using The New York Times as reference material in the classroom. I feel that being able to read and interpret a newspaper is important, and students can only benefit from becoming familiar with how to read a newspaper. Also, students should be aware of wordly news and I agree that giving them "up to date subject material" could only motivate them! Lastly, the trailer creation in place of a book report is a wonderful idea!
